Project Goals

The aim of the project is the scientific-technological development of a POSCIEP device for multiparametric analysis, which will be designed for daily use in surgery and which, based on elasticity and strength measurements of skin and tissue, will be able to draw prognostic conclusions about the individual tissue condition and expected suture strength and wound healing. The following objectives are pursued with the design and use of the POSCIEP device:

1. Introduction of a handy analysis device for non-invasive diagnostics, which is used for early detection and avoidance of possible anastomosis complications in the context of age-appropriate surgery
2. Improve treatment success by objectively deciding on the selection and implementation of adapted surgical therapy.
3. Ensuring measures of optimal wound care that contribute to limiting inpatient length of stay and strengthening the autonomy of elderly patients in their home environment

• "Autonomy in the elderly- tumor stem cell and miRNA profile in the elderly cancer patient- potential biomarkers for individualization of cancer therapy in the elderly."

Project Goals

Screening and evaluation of an age-dependent tumor marker profile in colorectal carcinoma and pancreatic ductal carcinoma in association with the biomarker profile of the biologically and functionally elderly patient compared to the young patient with the same underlying disease for the development of alternative therapeutic approaches to improve individualized cancer therapy in the elderly. The studies are designed to achieve the following objectives:

1. Recognition and consideration of a predisposition of complicative courses or for the protection of biologically old patients, especially in the case of standard chemotherapy-associated toxicities or resistances.
2. Improvement of the treatment success by an extension of the therapy concept for chronologically aged but biologically and functionally "young" patients.
3. Analysis and recording of changes in age-related tumor and biomarker profiles during chemotherapy of biologically and functionally elderly patients compared to young patients with the same underlying disease for the development of new therapeutic concepts for elderly cancer patients.

"Interrelationship between autophagosomal zymogen activation and inflammatory responses in chronic pancreatitis (CP)."

Project Goals

To investigate the role of autophagy in the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis and to address the following questions:

1. During the course of experimental CP, does the responsiveness of still-functional acinar cells to hormonal hyperstimulation persist?
2. Are processes of autophagosomal zymogen activation affected by pancreatitis-activated inflammatory cells and mediators?
3. If so, what is the contribution of inflammatory-enhanced zymogen activation to cell injury and progression of chronic pancreatitis?
